“Happy Anniversary!!! May your life be filled to the brim with happiness! This is how, or something like this, you can congratulate your dear friends on this bright and no doubt joyful event in their lives. And then hand over exclusive postcard handmade especially for their wedding anniversary. They will be happy and you will be happy!

So I was pleased to receive a beautiful and especially sweet postcard from my sister the other day on the occasion of our anniversary with my husband. True, this event happened to us last year at the beginning of autumn, but these are already technical points (we returned very late from summer vacation). And this accidental lateness is absolutely important, unlike attention and care. Thank you, Svetik! Very beautiful postcard!

As you probably guessed, the topic of our master class is a do-it-yourself postcard for a wedding anniversary. What is special about such a postcard? How should it differ from the usual greeting cards and how to make it. We will discuss these issues in today's article.

Do-it-yourself wedding anniversary card - master class

To answer the questions above regarding fundamental differences such postcards, I took the liberty of starting our conversation with the theory. It seems to me that when the creation process is still far ahead, and all your thoughts are occupied with the idea, then the work in the future often turns out to be much more thoughtful, interesting and complete. In any case, this is exactly what happens to me.

When I think in advance about my customer, about his way of thinking and his lifestyle, the products look much more organic on him. Therefore, I will try to analyze the already finished postcard from Svetlana and try to highlight for myself some key points that make this postcard so dear and warm for me personally.

What is special about such a postcard?

I already mentioned once that postcards created using the scrapbooking technique have some kind of special homely warmth. And our postcard today is no exception. Made in the retro or vintage style beloved by many scrapbooking connoisseurs, it seems so warm, soulful ... and smells very delicious of coffee.

All these features are not accidental. They were pre-thought out and defined. And this is what should differ, in my humble amateur opinion, all postcards self made. They should not be performed as standard, as if they had just left the assembly line. They must have a "soul". More precisely, they must be able to touch the souls of those to whom they are intended.

Therefore, if we are talking specifically about wedding anniversary cards, then in such cards it is worth considering those points that distinguish this or that particular couple from all other couples. Perhaps these will be their favorite colors. Or a style of clothing that can be very interesting to beat in the decor of a postcard. Or it could be their favorite things, objects, smells.

So, in this case, Svetlana chose very deep colors - dark green and wine, additionally shading it along the edges. And with a smile on my face, I can admit that these are really my colors. They suit me very well and I have things of these shades in my wardrobe.

black and white family photo in an aged frame and a well-chosen phrase allude to the fact that married couple, for which the postcard is intended, already has some way behind it. These are not newlyweds. This is an established family and, judging by the inscription, quite happy. Again I smile, but to analyze, affecting myself personally, is quite funny. It gives the impression that you are a braggart.

I will dwell on two more very characteristic details - this is a piece of photographic film and the aroma of coffee. The smell of coffee is the smell of my husband and his favorite drink. Photographic film can actually carry two completely different semantic loads, in my opinion. And I can’t even imagine what exactly Svetlana put into it.

Well, first of all, my husband is a photographer. And the film is quite a long part of his life. The entire period of his life that preceded the appearance of the digital in the photo industry. And secondly, film is always history. Especially for people of my time and older. Each family has always had several huge albums with a great many photographs of various sizes - from 3x4 to 20x30 cm.

Moreover, among the photographs very often came across negatives that were never printed. Those. Film is an integral part of family life, in my opinion. This is a modest witness to all the significant events of each individual family.

Here are the most significant signs that define this postcard as a postcard for our family. Let me briefly go over the main ones again:

  • an inscription reflecting the general mood of the event
  • color spectrum
  • details (photos, film)
  • fragrance

But of course, all postcards are different and families are also different. Therefore, in each case, your wedding anniversary card may contain some of its own characteristics and signs that allow you to identify it with one or another married couple. I just tried to determine the guidelines that can be followed when designing such postcards.

And now I present to your attention a detailed description of the creation of our postcard. Apparently anticipating my interest in the master class, Svetlana decided to please me not only with a postcard, but also step by step photos for which special thanks to her. We look.

List of materials for making a postcard

To start, let's prepare necessary materials and tools. I have prepared a list of them for you below. Much of the above can be replaced, but I will talk about this a little later. So, we will need:

  • base for a postcard
  • scrap paper
  • lace
  • ribbon
  • paper flowers
  • glue, scissors, pencil, ruler
  • inkpad
  • black and white photography
  • photo frame
  • piece of film

And now about everything in order. Basis for a postcard. Usually such bases can be purchased in specialized stores and they can be of different sizes and densities. But you can easily make such a base with your own hands. To do this, it is enough to cut a rectangle of the desired size from a regular sheet of whatman paper or watercolor paper.

Scrap paper. You can also make it yourself by printing your favorite image on an office sheet. Of course, in terms of density, such a background will be seriously inferior to the purchased sheet, but if it is not possible, then this will be quite an option. Moreover, in the future we will stick these sheets on a denser base.

You can also make a photo frame yourself by cutting it out of thick cardboard and painting it white. And even a piece of photographic film can be made at home. To do this, you just need to print a picture with the image of this very film on a special transparent file designed for printing on a printer. Or… there is another one interesting option, but I will talk about it below.

What, why and how - the process of creating a postcard with your own hands

From scrap paper or do-it-yourself background paper, we cut out two squares with sides of 13x13 cm. Dimensions, of course, may vary. But for a postcard measuring 13.5x13.5 cm, the dimensions for the background will be exactly the same as I wrote above.

We tear these sheets in several places and with the help of sandpaper or a nail file we thin the edges to give it the effect of shabby and aged. Next, tint the edges of the paper with a stamp pad. We got two backgrounds for decorating the front and back sides of the postcard. We put them aside.

For the back side, we will additionally do something like a label, which will further emphasize the warmth and uniqueness of the finished postcard. On a small piece of paper, matching in tone to the base-blank, we put a seal or do it by hand beautiful inscription with the words "handmade".

We process the edges of the label with sandpaper (nail file) and tint with a stamp pad. Then glue the label to one of the details of the background.

The back side of the card is decorated with us, it remains to decorate its front side. To begin with, we will attach the prepared decor elements and figure out what, where and how it will lie. In other words, let's think about the composition of the design.

Having found the most interesting location, we fix it in our memory or on the camera and get to work. We first glue the background blanks themselves to the base of our postcard, and then glue the photo on top of the foreground.

The photo can initially be simply printed in black and white. Or it can be aged with the help of one of the Photoshop lessons and then scratched additionally for greater importance.

A detailed video tutorial on how to age a photo in Photoshop can be found at the end of this article. In the meantime, I will say a few words about how you should not glue background images to the base for a postcard.

Try to apply glue pointwise and not at all. So that after gluing the background remains movable at the edges. Then you can easily achieve the very effect of shabby, worn and aged - all that distinguishes the Retro style from all other style decisions.

After all the preparatory work, we tint the lace in a strong solution of coffee and glue it on the glue gun. From above, on the same glue gun, we fix a white aged photo frame. As I said earlier, the frame was cut out of thick cardboard with a craft knife, painted white and slightly aged with craquelure.

On a sheet of film for the printer, print the image of the film. Another option that can be used here is to print the image on a sheet of office paper, cut out windows from it and then stick it on a transparent film in which bouquets of flowers are wrapped. It is perfect for us both in terms of stiffness and thickness.

We cut out the printed film, insert a frame under the photo and glue it on the glue gun.

Now flowers. We need some green leaves. They can be cut out of green cardboard and it is better that it be double-sided. We collect the leaves along a narrow green strip and get a beautiful lush twig.

Then we take satin ribbon, we tie it in a bow, drape it at will and attach it over the twig. Decorate with a paper flower on top. By the way, it was very detailed by me in one of the past master classes. Check it out, I'm sure you will like it very much, and for your postcard you will make flowers according to this description.

There was the last, but very important touch. We need to pick up an inscription. Remember, I said that the inscription, along with other points, is very important and should reflect the essence of the family for which the card is being prepared? For young couples, some inscriptions are suitable, and for older, mature couples, the inscriptions will be completely different. Although, by and large, of course, they should all talk about love, happiness, intimacy and strength of family relationships.

After you have decided on the inscription, you need to print it on a printer, cut it out and tint it. Moreover, tinting can be carried out in two stages. First, you can tint the coffee, and then add the necessary underlining strokes with the help of an ink pad. The edges, as usual, are scratched with sandpaper and additionally tinted with a pad. Ready. Feel free to glue.

It remains to write a congratulations. Now, thanks to the Internet, we have a very large selection of congratulatory lines in our arsenal, but remember that even the smallest addition in the form of your personal two sentences or 3-4 words can say much more than all the most beautiful ready-made congratulations peace!

Postcard is ready! It remains to wait for our return from a protracted vacation and get it. And here is the promised video lesson on aging photos in Photoshop. Watch, remember and repeat. As a result, you will get a truly rare, vintage photograph.

I really hope, friends, that you were satisfied with our today's lesson. A do-it-yourself card for the wedding anniversary of dear friends (or relatives) was a success! It accurately reflects the mood of a married couple and they will surely like it very much.

I am sure that your own postcard will make no less impression on your close friends.

Do you know what I thought when I wrote this article? Previously, when I chose a postcard in a store to give it to someone, I very carefully examined it - from different sides and more than once - for scratches, dents, cracks, torn edges ... And now all my familiar needlewomen and I , including buying expensive scrap paper, ordering designer cardboard from distant countries, waiting for it, perhaps for more than one week, and then the most unthinkable begins - we start to crumple, tear, scratch it all, with sandpaper, dirty all kinds of ink...

But we don't stop there! At the end of everything, we soak the whole thing in a cup of coffee, and bloated, warped and covered with bubbles and waves, we send it to dry. And not just in a warm place, but on a hot electric burner!!! And then, admiring all this magnificent disgrace, we give. So funny…

Creative success and good mood!

Any major event begins with creating a guest list and alerting those invited of the impending event. There are many ways to do this, but for the most important celebrations, such as weddings, there is no better solution than sending postcards.

It would seem, what could be easier? But in the case of such a serious event, there are no minor details, so the choice of postcards should also be approached thoroughly.

Shops and bridal salons are ready to offer many designs of invitations, hundreds of unique cards that future spouses will only need to sign.

This will save them a lot of time and is perfect if you plan to big celebration with many guests.

And for a smaller-scale celebration of this day, you can consider a more interesting proposal - creating postcards with your own hands.

Of course, this will take a lot of time and the card will not look as perfect as a purchased one, but it will certainly be unique, emphasize the importance of the person to whom it will be sent, and besides, a piece of the newlyweds' warmth will be invested in it.

The choice of design will be limited only by the imagination of the hand-maker, so that each guest has the opportunity to receive a card that no one else will have.

What do you need to create a handmade wedding invitation?

If you decide to stop at homemade invitations, do not be afraid: you will not need anything but paper (you can use colored paper, you can use white paper, depending on what you want to see in the end), scissors, glue and writing utensils - this is the minimum set.

You can take paints if you know how to draw and are ready to spend your energy on it. And if you want to add a couple more highlights, then rhinestones, sequins, artificial flowers and other delights.

Remember that only your own imagination is the limit.

How to make a handmade wedding card?

So, you've got everything you need and are ready to start creating your own little masterpieces, but don't know where to start. Here are a few examples that you can choose from or use to create something custom.

Example No. 1. Postcard with a voluminous heart

To create this postcard, you will need a sheet of cardboard, corrugated paper red and Pink colour, glue, scissors and pencil.

First, cut pieces of colored paper into small squares. Then draw the outline of a heart on the cardboard and spread it inside with glue. Alternately crushing the cut squares, glue them inside the contour.

When the work dries, all that remains is to sign.

Using a similar method, you can lay out absolutely any three-dimensional pattern, if the above pattern does not suit you.

Example #2. Postcard with a flower and a bow

This work will require a little more time and effort, as well as a little more inventory.

Additionally, you will need: 2 sheets of thick colored paper (one with a pattern), artificial flower, thin tape.

Start by cutting off a thin strip from a plain sheet and set it aside (it will come in handy a little later). Divide the remaining large part into two equal halves and fold.

Then cut the patterned paper into rectangles so that they match the length of the folded sheet. Set aside both blanks and tie the ribbon with a neat bow, on which, over the knot, attach a flower with glue (can be sewn on).

If the minimalist style does not evoke tender feelings in you, repeat the procedure with the flower and bow as many times as necessary.

Glue the design paper to the plain paper so that the rectangle is across the latter. Then glue the bow with the flower into the corner of the rectangle.

Then cut out a small rectangle from white paper on which the names of the bride and groom will be written. Glue it diagonally to one corner of the design paper.

It remains to write or print the text of the invitation and place it on the inside of the postcard.

As a gift to the couple

If you are not planning your own celebration in the near future, but ended up on the list of invitees to someone else's, then homemade postcard would be a great addition to a gift.

You will need: two types of white paper (thick and thin); patterned paper, made in light colors, rhinestones, scissors, glue, stationery.

Fold the thick paper in half, cut the patterned paper into rectangles so that their edges are less than the edges of thick paper by about 1–1.5 cm, and cut small, about 0.5 mm, ribbons from thin paper.

Glue thick and patterned paper together.

Now thin stripes come into play. We take one of them and wind it on a simple pencil, remove the resulting spiral. Lubricate the outer tip with glue and apply to the previous curl so that the “roll” does not unwind.

Now we make flower petals from the resulting circles, slightly flattening them with our fingertips and gluing them to a patterned rectangle. Glue rhinestones as the core of the flower.

The postcard can be decorated with those spirals that untwist in the process of work, forming stems from them.

When the composition dries, write your wishes on the inside.

Important! The twisting method will also be useful in composing an invitation.

Summarizing

To receive a unique postcard, no special skills are required, you just need to have a little desire, time and imagination. Remember that the work must be done carefully - this is one of the most important components of beauty.
